A Sisal Carpet Guide

Sisal Carpet

Thinking of buying a sisal carpet for your home? Natural sisal carpets are durable floor coverings made from the stiff fibers of the agave plant. The leaves from the plant can be quite sharp, which lends strength to the material itself. The sisal yarn obtained after processing the sisal leaves is blended with more traditional materials such as wool, and then stuck onto a latex backing. After this, the fiber carpet is cut to the appropriate size and edged to avoid fraying.

Sisal floor carpets can withstand a good degree of impact and staining because of the structure of the material. A sisal floor covering is also static-electricity resistant, so it does not attract as much dust and dirt as other carpeting materials do. The material also looks great because of its structure and texture, and adds a lot of style to its surroundings while complementing many interior design and furniture styles. However, there are some concerns you need to know about if you’re in the market for sisal rugs and carpets. These floor coverings may not be suitable for extremely high-traffic areas because they will show some wear and tear, and can be a lot more expensive than other conventional carpeting materials. Also, the backing of these carpets (necessary because of the material’s tendency to curl up after some time) can prove problematic to people who are allergic to latex – there are, however, hypo-allergenic alternatives.

To get the look and feel of natural sisal without going beyond your budget, you can go with a synthetic sisal carpet. Although some designers and homeowners report that synthetic carpets do eliminate some of the problems of ordinary sisal, they also say using synthetic sisal ruins the entire point of the original material being natural and somewhat hard to come by. If you absolutely have to go natural with your carpeting, you could opt for smaller floor coverings by buying a natural sisal rug or sisal floor mats instead of an expansive carpet, or by purchasing and using sisal tiles.

Natural sisal carpeting can be a tad more costly than many expect because of its availability, but the unique look and feel of the material means that it will always have a place in modern interior design. The natural luster and strength of a sisal carpet (as well as its availability in different tones and textures) makes it a great addition to a room or space of virtually any style or theme.
